Copyrights in a Song: The Musical Work Copyright They both involve different rights and sometimes different owners. It is important to understand that the two main copyrights in a song are separate and distinct. One in the recording of the song ( the Sound Recording Copyright). One in the written song itself ( the Musical Work Copyright). In every recorded song there exists two main copyrights. Our copyright system has developed in bits and pieces over decades, so there are layers of complexity at play here. Many artists I work with have a tough time understanding the different copyrights in a song.
